The evolution of social media has brought people together in ways we never imagined, offering platforms to connect, share, and advocate for meaningful causes. Yet, it’s no secret that these platforms often fail at maintaining equitable standards for user conduct. My recent experience with TikTok has left me frustrated, angry, and questioning the priorities of platforms that claim to champion inclusivity and community standards.
While scrolling through TikTok, I came across a comment that was not only offensive but blatantly discriminatory. A user, in their attempt to mock someone having a meltdown, compared their behavior to a disabled individual riding the "short bus" and used the word “retard” as a derogatory slur. The comment was laced with ridicule, weaponizing stereotypes about the disabled community to demean another person. Disgusted, I reported the comment, citing its ableist language and a clear violation of community guidelines.
Instead of receiving the validation that TikTok would take action against such hate speech, I was met with a shocking response: my comment was flagged and taken down. What did I say to deserve this? I simply defended the disabled community by stating, “Don’t compare us to that idiot.” I stood up against the offensive rhetoric, yet TikTok chose to silence me instead of the person perpetuating harmful stereotypes.
This experience is not just frustrating, it’s infuriating. TikTok’s failure to address the original comment while punishing someone for calling out ableism reveals the glaring inconsistencies in their moderation policies. It begs the question: Who are these policies protecting?
The Larger Issue at Hand....
This isn’t just about my experience; it’s about a systemic failure across social media platforms. The use of slurs like “retard” and derogatory references like the "short bus" perpetuate harmful stereotypes that stigmatize disabled individuals. These words and phrases are not harmless, they reinforce discrimination, marginalization, and ridicule. Allowing such comments to stand unchallenged sends a clear message, hate speech against disabled people isn’t taken seriously.
When platforms claim to uphold "community standards," those standards must be applied universally. The selective enforcement of these rules where defending oneself or others from hate speech is penalized more harshly than the hate speech itself, undermines any pretense of fairness or decency. It emboldens those who spread hate while silencing those who stand against it.
Why This Matters...
The disabled community has long been subjected to ridicule, stereotyping, and dehumanization. Social media platforms, with their global reach, have a responsibility to foster environments where such behavior is not tolerated. Instead, incidents like this show how easily platforms can become complicit in perpetuating harm.
By removing my comment and leaving the original discriminatory one untouched, TikTok failed on several fronts:
Social media companies must do better. Their moderation systems, whether AI-driven or human-reviewed need to be reevaluated to ensure they are not inadvertently silencing those who fight against injustice. This includes:
To the disabled community and our allies: let this be a reminder that our voices matter. We must continue to stand against ableism and discrimination, even when platforms try to silence us. Every act of resistance chips away at the culture of hate that has long gone unchecked.
To TikTok and other platforms, this is your wake-up call. If you truly value inclusivity, it’s time to back your words with action. Your policies are meaningless if they fail to protect the people they are meant to serve.
Until then, we will continue to call out these failures loudly and unapologetically. Because no platform, no matter how large, has the right to silence the fight for justice and equality.
